A St. Johns County deputy accused of mishandling funds from a non-profit surrendered himself to jail on Friday after the state attorney filed a federal charge against the deputy.
Sgt. Robert Gober III is accused of using more than $1,300 from the St. Johns County Police Athletic League for personal reasons.

Since the accusation, the sheriff's office has been working to change how money is accounted for once it comes to PAL. "We are going to fix these issues, and we are going to ensure that they don't happen again," said Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan.
He said that Mulligan the office is implementing stricter rules based on a 22-page internal control manual that is already used within the law enforcement agency.
The organization has also hired someone to act as a safeguard. Parents will also be able to make payments online, rather than by cash.
