The family of a Jacksonville man Vernell Bing Jr. who was shot in 2016 is disappointed but not surprised that the shooting has been ruled justifiable.
The family's attorney, Ron Kurpiers, confirmed this with Action News Jax and said the family applauds Melissa Nelson for transparency, even though the family doesn’t agree with the ruling.
The family says Nelson is “better than her predecessor.”
Jacksonville Officer Tyler Landreville shot and killed Vernell Bing Jr. in May 2016 and has been back on patrol after more than a year on administrative leave.
Landreville shot and killed Bing in Historic Springfield. Police say Bing was in a vehicle stolen in an armed carjacking when he led police on a high-speed chase that ended when Bing crashed into an officer’s vehicle.
Landreville fired multiple times at Bing, who was unarmed, striking him once in the head.
Since the shooting, Bing's family have pushed for body cameras on officers, but now has doubts about that, too.
