The suspect in the disappearance of a St. Johns County priest is now booked into the St. Johns County Jail, according to St. Johns County Sheriff's Office online records.
Earlier Friday, 28-year-old Steven Murray was taken from jail in Aiken, South Carolina and was extradited back to Florida.
Murray is the prime suspect in the disappearance of Father Rene Robert, a 71-year-old Catholic priest who has not been seen since Sunday, when he was scheduled to visit a patient at Orange Park Medical Center.
Murray has a lengthy criminal history and has used and alias at least once. Since 2012, he has a rap sheet which includes burglary, failing to appear while on bail, and driving with a suspended license.
On an arrest report from 2012, the name “Louis Sedillo” appears as an alias. Not only that, there’s a birth date different from Murray’s.
“It’s probably someone he was acquainted with or he knew,” said Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson. “Usually if it’s a nickname it’s just one word.”
Jefferson said it’s common for career criminals to use an alias to try and keep charges off their permanent record.
He said a fingerprint check is enough to determine who the criminal really is.
“He could use any name he wants to use,” said Jefferson. “Once they run the prints, they’ll know exactly who they’re dealing with.”
