A teen is thanking first responders who rescued her and her friend after a DUI crash in Nassau County.

Trinity Hancock, 14, and seven other children were inside a car driven by Tonya Capallia-Eason when she crashed into a pole in Yulee in October 2016.

Capallia-Eason’s two sons were killed, and the other children were hurt after the SUV flipped, troopers said.

Trinity, who was hurt in the crash, said she has a new appreciation for first responders.

She sent a thank you message to the Fernandina Beach Fire Department.

“I never noticed how much ya’ll do," she wrote to the fire station. "If it wasn’t for the fire rescuers, my best friend would have died also."

Ty Silcox, fire chief in Fernandina Beach, said he got Trinity’s message Tuesday night.

“It is very meaningful because you do get to know, ok, that person was in really bad shape when we responded to them but they had a positive outcome," Silcox said. "That is, at the end of the day, what keeps you going.”

Trinity said she hopes to meet the firefighters and thank them in person one day.

"I'm not sure when, but my mom definitely said we are going to," she said. "I think it will be amazing."

Silcox said he hopes she does come to the station.

"The guys would really appreciate it. They would get to see that their work turned out great.”
