JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The next time you fill up your tank, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Florida’s new gas tax holiday went into effect yesterday for the whole month of October.
Action News Jax spoke with residents who are happy to give their wallets a break.
“We should have been doing that a long time ago,” says Darion Mayo.
Drivers will get a 25-cent rebate per gallon of gasoline.
Something that Mayo believes will be helpful.
“Traffic wise you burn a lot of gas during traffic each and every day so that’s good to get gas and not have to worry about taxes,” says Mayo.
The state of Florida and Jacksonville have seen higher than normal gas prices this year.
The state hit a record high of $4.49 a gallon in May.
It has now dropped to $3.25 cents a gallon but is still about a quarter more than it was last year, so the holiday couldn’t come at a better time.
Mayo says it is a blessing because of how much he travels on a daily basis.
For me, I drive about a 40-minute commute to work every day so I’m getting gas live every other day,” says Mayo.
Governor Ron DeSantis says the holiday should save drivers about $200 million over the month of October.
For door dash driver Qwazem Scruggs it’ll help his bottom line, and as a bargain hunter, help save time searching for deals.
“I’m looking around for the cheapest gas. Gas has been three almost four dollars,” says Scruggs.
This gas tax holiday ends October 31.
