An off-duty officer traveling westbound on Arlington Expressway was waved down by a passerby who witnessed the person being hit, a JSO news release states.

“The Officer then observed the Chevrolet Tahoe further down the road on the right-hand shoulder with emergency flashers on,” the news release states. “The Officer then saw a dark object laying across the center of both lanes and tried to avoid striking it, but the wheels of the police car ran over the pedestrian.”

All westbound lanes were closed. Police did not release the identity of the person who was hit, but said he was in his mid-30′s.
