Cellphone video shows a man taking cover behind a patrol car after an armed carjacking in Clay County.
Witnesses say a man dropped a gun inside the Circle K off Jefferson Street and Blanding Boulevard on Saturday night before carjacking a man at gunpoint outside.
Deputies say the suspect then fled southbound on Blanding – with the victim inside the car – before crashing into cars stopped at Branan Field Road.
Jim Plant was inside one of those vehicles.
“It was immediately police screaming, ‘Drop the gun, drop the gun,’ so I got down in my truck,” he said.
Minutes later, he was escorted to the back of a patrol car, where he crouched for safety.
From there, he captured video of deputies, weapons drawn, calling out to the suspect.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office then brought out a K-9 and 31-year-old Derrick Dunham was taken into custody.
Dunham and the 55-year-old carjacking victim were taken to the hospital.
Dunham is facing charges including carjacking with a firearm, kidnapping and aggravated assault.
Plant’s Chevrolet 2500 was damaged in the crash. He says a truck with three 17-year-olds inside crashed into the back of it.
“If my truck was intended to help somebody or whatever I’m fine with it. It’s just a truck. Over a human life, it's not even a question,” he said.
The carjacking victim posted a message on Facebook thanking the deputies who came to his aid.
