Original Story:
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that more Publix pharmacies will be carrying the COVID-19 vaccine, including some in our area.
So far, vaccinations will be happening at more than 100 Publix pharmacy locations in about a dozen counties.
During a news conference in Ponte Vedra Beach, DeSantis said 14 Publix pharmacy locations in St. Johns County will start to administer COVID-19 vaccinations by appointment only. Action News Jax’s Alicia Tarancon found out that vaccinations will begin on Thursday.
Judi Grewell lives in St. Johns County and has been running into issues trying to get an appointment for the vaccine.
“The appointments seem to disappear before you can actually get through,” Grewell said.
On Wednesday, she found out that her local Publix pharmacy at Sawgrass Village in Ponte Vedra Beach will be carrying the Moderna vaccine.
DeSantis said that Publix is one of 14 Publix pharmacies within the county that will administer the vaccines. Publix will administer between 100 to 125 shots each day.
It’s part of a partnership between Publix and the state.
Earlier this week, the program expanded into the state’s panhandle. Last week, it went live in Hernado, Marion and Citrus counties. DeSantis says the goal is to get seniors vaccinated first.
It’s by appointment only and you have to go online to book it. DeSantis said more information on how to reserve an appointment time will be available at www.publix.com/covidvaccine.

He also added that appointments will go fast. If you aren’t able to schedule an appointment right away, the governor is asking for patience, as more appointments will open up in the future.
“For those who may not get an appointment today or may not be able to get it this round, hang in there. You’re going to get it. This is more demand than the iPhone,” DeSantis said.
And the demand is up.
Veola Hayes wanted to get one as soon as she heard it was coming to Publix. “I thought I’ll just dash over here early because you know I want to get it,” Hayes said.
Action News Jax spoke with a number of seniors that pulled up the website to show us there were no more appointments available for the day. Grewell told Action News Jax that in a county that has a lot of seniors, she’s hopeful she can eventually get the vaccine in a more convenient location.
“It’s like two minutes from where I live. I don’t have to go into a part of the city I don’t know,” Grewell said.
DeSantis told Action News Jax he wants to expand the partnership between Publix locations everywhere, including Duval County, if they get more vaccines, but right now he’s confident in Duval’s hospital system.
