JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman is dead Wednesday morning after a fire at a home in Jacksonville’s Lakewood community.
Police patrolling the area along Hendricks Avenue after midnight began smelling smoke, according to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The officers responded to a nearby neighborhood where they saw a home in the 4000 block of Pinewood Avenue on fire.
Police observed flames about 4 to 5 feet coming from the home and they were unable to enter. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department were called in to battle the blaze. Firefighters made entry into the home and located an adult female inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene, a JSO news release states.

Officers also located a cat in the home. It was taken to a local vet.
“It appears this is a tragic accident; however, the investigation is continuing, and currently the classification is pending,” the JSO news release states.
