A Jacksonville woman was expecting a $4,000 diamond ring in the mail, but when the box arrived she said it was ripped open and empty.

The U.S. Postal Service denied her claim, even though Jonette Lieurance paid to insure the shipment from Tennessee.

“It feels like I paid for an item to be stolen,” said Lieurance.

Lieurance just wanted to be done with the shipment.

Instead, she’s been fighting a battle with USPS for three months.

“I was sending the ring back to – she was going to be my mother-in-law. It was an engagement ring. And I broke off the engagement and was sending her the ring,” said Lieurance. “A few days later, she said, ‘I got the box but it’s empty.’ And I was like, ‘You’re kidding.’”

A USPS sticker on the box confirmed it was “received unsealed.”

Lieurance’s receipt shows she paid an extra $51.65 to insure the ring, but USPS has denied her claim three times.

Letters from USPS said they denied her claim because the appraisal of the ring, documenting its $4,000 value, is dated about a week after the shipping date.

Lieurance said she got the appraisal done the day of the shipment, but the paper documentation wasn’t ready until the following week.

She said she just wants the issue resolved for her former future mother-in-law.

“Glendra doesn’t deserve this. She doesn’t deserve to be put through this,” said Lieurance. “I just want her to get the money that she deserves.”

The USPS Office of Inspector General said its investigation into the alleged theft is ongoing.
