NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — A man is charged with child neglect after deputies learned during a traffic stop that the man had left an 8-week-old alone at his mobile home.
The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop late Monday night when a vehicle was spotted traveling on the wrong side of the road while turning into the south entrance of Tractor Lane from U.S. Highway 1.
The driver gave deputies permission to search the vehicle. The passenger, Russell Bird, was removed from the vehicle.
Deputies found a bag of methamphetamine inside a pack of cigarettes, which was dropped when Bird exited the vehicle.
Bird began yelling for his landlord to check on his 8-week-old when deputies attempted to place him into custody. Deputies went with the landlord to the camper and found the infant alone lying in a bassinet.
Deputies also found multiple drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine residue around the child’s bassinet and throughout the camper.
The Department of Children and Families was called and took the custody of the infant. It's mother is in prison.
Bird is charged with child neglect and possession of a controlled substance.
