On Thursday, the Florida Forestry Service said no homes were threatened, but neighbors near Secondina Road and Main Street feared a shift in the wind could be devastating.
“I’ve come down to talk with some of the firefighters, and if they think there’s a possibility of the fire getting right at my house, I’m gone,” said 45-year resident Sheryl Payne.
“I keep hearing all these helicopters going and coming, and I just don’t feel safe out here right now,” Payne added.

Earl Allen gave Action News Jax exclusive access to the fire’s outer edge, which he said was only about 1,000 feet from his property. There, our cameras captured smoke and flames and forestry crews working.
Since Allen knows the area, he was helping forestry crews work.
“I’ve got a lot of animals up there,” Allen said. “And I don’t want to have to lose them or haul them off either, so that’s why I’m trying to do my part and help what I can.”
Payne said the smoke is too close for comfort.
“I’m just scared, so I’ll be glad when it’s over,” Payne said.
Thursday evening, the FFS said the fire had consumed 450 acres and was 30% contained.
