ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — One person was killed and four others were wounded as an outdoor boxing match in Florida turned into a deadly shootout among spectators, authorities said.
Officers from the St. Petersburg Police Department responded at about 8:15 p.m. EDT to the Skyway Plaza, where a temporary boxing ring had been constructed in a back parking lot, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
“It’s just a large parking area that’s right behind the shopping center. And the parking lot is surrounded by a high concrete wall so you really can’t see anything from the street behind the shopping center,” St. Petersburg Police spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez told WTVT. “But it is a full-blown boxing ring with chairs set up and a couple of hundred people attending this boxing match.”
Police said two groups began fighting and shots were fired, WTSP reported.
One man was taken to an area hospital, where he died, the Times reported. Two men and two women were also injured, WTSP reported. One of the victims was in critical condition, according to WTVT.
No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
