According to WFTV, the incident began about 5 p.m. Tuesday after the teen and a 12-year-old boy fled a halfway house and broke into an Osteen Enterprise Road home. Multiple firearms were inside the residence, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

According to deputies, both Jackson and O’Brien, who had been reported as runaways from the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, have been charged with attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and armed burglary of a dwelling, the TV station reported.

Update 11 a.m. ET June 2: The 14-year-old girl injured during an hourslong standoff with police that began Tuesday afternoon was in stable condition on Wednesday after undergoing surgery, WFTV reported.

Authorities shot the teen after she twice pointed a shotgun at deputies, according to the news station. The 12-year-old boy she was with also armed himself with an AK-47 assault rifle, authorities said. However, he put the weapon down and was not injured, WFTV reported.

Original report: Chitwood said deputies responded to the scene and, despite being fired upon “multiple times,” initially did not shoot back, WFTV reported. Deputies also tried to de-escalate the situation multiple times and “threw a cellphone into the home to communicate with the children,” according to the news outlet.

The girl eventually came out of the home about 8:40 p.m. and threatened to shoot a sheriff’s sergeant, Chitwood said. She later pointed a shotgun at authorities, who then told her to drop her weapon, he said. When she failed to comply, deputies opened fire, striking her, Chitwood said.

The girl was rushed to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, Chitwood said. In a news release early Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said she was in stable condition following surgery and transferred to another hospital.

The boy, who is diabetic, had been holding an AK-47 but surrendered to deputies, the release said. Although he was not injured in the incident, he was taken to the hospital “for treatment of his medical condition,” according to the release.

No deputies were injured, authorities said.

Chitwood said the girl previously was accused of stealing puppies and setting her Flagler County halfway home on fire, WFTV reported.
