LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Police arrested 87 protesters who gathered Tuesday on the front lawn of Kentucky’s attorney general, authorities said.
More than 100 protesters marched through Louisville, calling for justice for Breonna Taylor, and wound up in the yard of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, the Lousiville Courier-Journal reported.
People who obeyed police orders to leave the yard received a citation, while those who refused to go were arrested, WLKY reported. People arrested were charged with intimidating a participant in a legal process, a Class D felony; second-degree disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor; and third-degree criminal trespass.
Three officers served a warrant at Taylor’s house on March 13, and one of at least two officers fired weapons, killing the 26-year-old. Louisville Metro Police Department Officer Brett Hankison was fired for his role in the fatal shooting last month. Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Officer Myles Cosgrove remain on administrative paid leave.
Since Taylor’s death, Louisville has banned no-knock warrants, WLKY reported.
Until Freedom, a New York-based social justice organization, led the demonstration from Ballard High School to Cameron’s home.
Linda Sarsour, a co-founder of Until Freedom, told neighbors, “We want you all to know that you may see us often in your neighborhood,” the Courier-Journal reported. “We are here to hold Daniel Cameron accountable and make sure that he does his job, because he is not doing his job.”
One of the protesters arrested was “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Porsha Williams, who was there with the Until Freedom protesters. WHAS reported.
In a statement, Cameron said, “Justice is not achieved by trespassing on private property, and it’s not achieved through escalation. It’s achieved by examining the facts in an impartial and unbiased manner. That is exactly what we are going to do in this investigation.”
