TAMPA, Fla. — Whoa, baby.
According to WBBH and WFTS, a female southern white rhino calf was born at Florida’s ZooTampa last week.
The Tampa attraction took to social media Saturday to announce that mother Alake and father Ongava welcomed the newborn, who has not been named, “during the overnight hours of Sunday, June 6.”
“The baby rhino appears to be strong and is nursing alongside her mother,” the zoo captioned two photos of the new arrival. “This birth marks the eighth southern white rhino calf born at ZooTampa.”
The baby “is expected to join the ‘crash’ – the term for a group of rhinos – in the coming weeks,” the zoo wrote, adding that visitors will eventually be able to see the newborn from the Expedition Wild Africa ride when it opens this summer.
