APEX, N.C. — Children are still enjoying summer vacation in North Carolina, but a new sign at an elementary school had area adults doing a double-take -- and led to a red-faced moment for local educators.

A sign in front of Apex Friendship Elementary School was misspelled, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported. The word “friendship” was misspelled, according to the newspaper.

While the sign was quickly removed, several residents managed to take a photograph and posted the gaffe on social media.

“It wasn’t one of those where we misspelled our own name,” Lisa Luten, communications director for Wake County public schools, told The News & Observer. “We ordered something and they’re fixing it.”

Luten told WRAL-TV that the school system worked with a contracting company, Barnhill Contracting Company of Raleigh, to create the sign. Luten believes a cast stone fabricator is responsible for the spelling error, the television station reported.

Luten said the error was not discovered until the sign was delivered, according to The News & Observer. The sign was quickly removed and a new one has been ordered, Luten said.

“We’re a school system,” Luten said. “We take spelling seriously.”

Photos of the sign have been posted on multiple social media sites, including The State You’re In and a Facebook group for residents who live in the Jordan Pointe neighborhood near the school.

“Six people already this morning have sent this to me,” school board candidate Steve Bergstrom tweeted Wednesday. “Seriously though… glad Jordan Pointe peeps have a sense of humor about it.”
