Florida man accused of carjacking van, attempting to run victim over

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — A Florida man is accused of carjacking a van and attempting to run over the victim at a gas station, authorities said.

Elijah Knight Sutton, 22, of Fort Walton Beach, was arrested Tuesday and charged with carjacking, aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, resisting without violence and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, according to the Okaloosa Department of Corrections online booking site.

According to the Fort Walton Beach Police Department, officers responded to a CEFCO convenience store after receiving reports of a stolen vehicle, the Northwest Florida Daily News reported. According to police, Sutton entered the parking lot and forcibly removed the victim from his company vehicle, according to the newspaper.

“Sutton then attempted to run over the victim who was fleeing on foot,” the Fort Walton Beach Police Department said in a news release. “During Sutton’s attempt to strike the victim, Sutton struck a parked vehicle and a fuel island, where the victim was attempting to seek shelter.”

According to police, Sutton sped through the parking lot and struck a light pole, WEAR-TV reported.

Police officers found Sutton on the property and were able to subdue him with help from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Daily News reported.

Sutton was being held in the Okaloosa County Jail without bond, online records show.
