NEW CANEY, Texas — A mother was killed Thursday and five other people were injured after a wheel flew off a truck and hit her windshield as she was driving.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said the woman and her 17-year-old son were headed to his baseball game around 7:15 p.m. when a tire flew from a Dodge pickup truck in the northbound lanes of the highway, bounced over the concrete barrier and crashed into her truck, KTRK reported.
The mother lost control of the truck she was driving and rear-ended a car with a father and three children inside. Her truck’s right rear wheel broke off and the vehicle eventually came to a stop.
The mother was killed instantly. Her son was asleep in the front passenger seat. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and is in stable condition, KPRC reported.
The father and three children were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Dodge was able to maintain control of the vehicle and came to a stop, KHOU reported. The cause of the wheel flying off is under investigation.
The names of those involved have not been released.
