KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Britt Reid, the Kansas City Chiefs’ assistant linebacker coach and the son of head coach Andy Reid, was involved in a three-vehicle crash Thursday night that resulted in injuries to two children, authorities said.
One of the children, a 5-year-old, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital, according to The Kansas City Star.
The crash occurred two days before the Chiefs were to fly to Tampa, Florida, where they will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV on Sunday. Britt Reid will not be coaching in the game, according to the NFL Network.
The Chiefs confirmed the incident in a statement late Friday afternoon. Britt Reid was hired as Kansas City’s quality control coach in 2013 when his father was hired by the Chiefs. He was promoted to his current role in 2019, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
“The organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving outside linebackers coach, Britt Reid,” the Chiefs said in their statement. “We are in the process of gathering information, and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”
According to a report by the Kansas City Police Department, the incident occurred at 9:10 p.m. Thursday. A gray Chevrolet Impala ran out of gas on the southbound entrance ramp on Interstate 435. The driver called relatives for help; they responded to provide aid and parked their vehicle, a Chevrolet Traverse, behind the Impala with its lights on.
A Ram Laramie Sport pickup truck, which KSHB reported was driven by Britt Reid, 35, was traveling on the entrance ramp to get on the interstate. The pickup truck struck the left front of the Impala, then continued south before hitting the rear of the Traverse, the television station reported.
The drivers of the Impala and Traverse were not injured, but the children, ages 4 and 5, who were sitting in the back of the Traverse, were hurt, according to The Star. The 4-year-old was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
According to KSHB, a police officer said officers could smell “a moderate odor of alcoholic beverages” and noticed Britt Reid’s eyes were “bloodshot and red.” Britt Reid allegedly told police he’d consumed “two to three drinks,” the television station reported, citing a search warrant application.
In 2008, Britt Reid pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of a controlled substance in the Philadelphia area, The Star reported. In January 2008, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that “Reid already (was) in Montgomery County Jail for a road-rage incident (in 2007), when he pulled a gun on another motorist.”
The Chiefs are scheduled to leave Saturday afternoon for Tampa, the Times reported.
