Jacksonville, FL — UPDATE 8:32 p.m.: All lanes have been reopened after the crash involving thirty-five vehicles on I-95 South at Airport Road.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the initial crash happened due to a tractor-trailer attempting to avoid a crash ahead of it. The tractor-trailer switched lanes, driving into another tractor-trailer after failing to see it. This resulted in a pile-up crash with six semi-trucks and twelve passenger vehicles.
After the initial crash, FHP worked six additional crashes that resulted from the first crash.
Over all, thirty-five vehicles were involved in the crash and eleven people were taken to the hospital, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department reported. Two people were freed from their vehicles.
One of the vehicles involved in the crash had two horses on board but both horses were uninjured, FHP says.
FHP believes weather did play a role in the crash as the roads were wet from rain.
