Demolition of Jacksonville Landing may take longer than expected

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News Jax has learned the demolition of the Jacksonville Landing may take a bit longer than expected.

Taxpayers are wondering the same because they are paying more than a million dollars to get this done.

A permit was recently issued to the contractor hired by the city to demolish the Landing.

Though fences and workers have been seen in the area getting the building ready to be brought down, according to the permit, contractors have until May 2020 to complete the demolition.

It's something David Papaj has been waiting for since the city's announcement to demolish it.

"I think they should have it done a lot sooner than that for the money the city is paying to have it completed," Papj said.

"Looks like they already got a lot of progress done. They stripped the interior out, it's ready to go, get it done," Papaj explained.

Previously, there was talk of the Landing being brought down by the end of 2019.

The city is still considering what to do with the waterfront property. There are ideas including making it a park, but nothing has been finalized at the time.
