Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried files to run for governor

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Another Democrat is putting their name in the race to be Florida’s next governor.

The state department’s website shows Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried filed to run for governor in the 2022 election on Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist announced last month that he also plans to run for the governor’s office to try to unseat Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Crist served as a Republican governor of Florida from 2007 to 2011, but did not seek reelection in 2010, when he instead made an unsuccessful run for the Senate.

This will be Crist’s second run as a Democrat since losing to now-Sen. Rick Scott in 2014.
