Tropical Storm Ian: Northeast Florida shelter information

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As Tropical Storm Ian impacts Northeast Florida, some parts of our area are opening up shelters.

Action News Jax is monitoring local counties as they release this information and will update this story as we learn more.

Baker County

The general population shelter will be at Macclenny Elementary School located at 1 Wild Kitten Drive in Macclenny, and the special needs shelter will be at Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital located at 159 N 3rd Street in Macclenny. Both shelters will open on Wednesday, September 28 at 1 p.m.

Clay County

The following schools will open as shelters:

  • Keystone Heights Junior/Senior High School, 900 Orchid Ave., Keystone Heights
  • Orange Park High School, 2300 Kingsley Ave., Orange Park
  • Wilkinson Junior High School, 5025 County Road 218, Middleburg
  • Clay High School, 2025 State Road 16, Green Cove Springs
  • Lake Asbury Junior High School, 2851 Sandridge Rd, Green Cove Springs

Columbia County

Columbia County will open two general population and one hybrid emergency shelter locations Wednesday at 6 p.m. to function as a host shelter and assist emergency evacuation efforts.

The emergency shelter locations provide shelter and restroom facilities for individuals seeking refuge from Hurricane Ian. The hybrid shelter location will have special needs capabilities. Please note Columbia County emergency shelters are not open to pets or animals. FIREARMS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN PUBLIC SHELTERS.

Due to limited space at emergency shelters, county officials encourage individuals seeking shelter to first contact family and friends that have a safe and secure building structure, and request to stay as a guest during or after the storm.

Winfield Community Center, 1324 NW Winfield St. Lake City, Fl. 32055

Pinemount Elementary School, **Hybrid Location**, 324 SW Gabriel Place Lake City, FL 32024

Fort White High School, 17828 SW State Road 47, Fort White, Fl. 32038

Putnam County

Shelters will be open starting Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at 6 p.m.

  • Robert H. Jenkins, Jr. Elementary School (formerly Interlachen Elementary School), 251 County Rd 315, Interlachen, FL
  • QI Roberts JR-SR High School, 901 State Rd 100, Florahome
  • Browning-Pearce Elementary School, 100 Bear Blvd, San Mateo
  • Middleton-Burney Elementary School, 1020 Huntington Rd, Crescent City

Pet-Friendly Shelter

  • Ockwilla Elementary School, 299 N. State Rd 21, Hawthorne
  • Special Needs (Run Through the Department of Health)
  • Kelley Smith Elementary School, 141 Kelley Smith School Rd, Palatka

Duval County

The Legends Center, located at 5130 Soutel Drive, will open as a shelter at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

St. Johns County

Three shelters will open beginning at 12 p.m. Wednesday:

  • Pacetti Bay Middle School (special needs shelter), 245 Meadowlark Lane, St. Augustine
  • South Woods Elementary School (pet friendly), 4750 State Road 206, Elkton
  • Pedro Menendez High School, 600 State Road 206 West, St. Augustine
