Georgia governor proposes legislation to suspend state motor fuel tax

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said he is taking matters into his own hands when it comes to gas prices.

This comes as Georgia gas prices near $4.17, which is actually lower than the $4.21 we’re seeing in Florida.

Right now it’s only a proposal, as Gov. Kemp is working with state legislators to get the ball moving in an attempt to save motorists some money.

“It’s a financial burden,” Georgia driver Lee Highfill said.

Highfill said every little bit helps.

He said he saw Gov. Kemp’s tweet about potentially suspending the state’s motor fuel tax.

“That would be great if he could. (He) should have done it last week,” Highfill said.

The governor said he is working with the Georgia House and Senate to quickly move legislation.

Camden County finds itself on the much higher side of the average gas price scale.

“This not only affects people traveling. It affects their livelihood. It affects all of your groceries and everything you consume,” Georgia driver Patrick McGhie said.

In Florida, Gov. DeSantis pitched a similar temporary gas tax holiday late last year.

However, legislators in Tallahassee so far have not followed through with his plan.

Gas prices have rapidly increased over the last week due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

President Biden announced on Tuesday the U.S. will ban all Russian oil imports.

For now, drivers have to and will be paying the price.

“I think anything can be done to bring them down. It needs to be done,” McGhie said.
