Hearings begin Monday on cause of Golden Ray capsizing

GEORGIA — This week the U.S Coast Guard is holding a public meeting to investigate why the Golden Ray cargo ship overturned.

Investigators are taking a closer look at the conditions of the ship before it capsized more than a year ago.

On Monday, the first hearing began with the Coast Guard describing the basic facts of the incident,  followed by a presentation of photos of the ship.

The carrier was leaving the port of Brunswick on Sept. 8th, 2019, heading to Baltimore with more than 4,000 cars on board.

During the hearing, audio was played of alarms going off inside the ship after it capsized.

The last crew members were rescued after being trapped for more than a day on the ship.

Teams are set to start removing the ship next month by cutting apart the ship into eight different sections. After this is completed, the ship will be put on a barge and taken away.
