Guns N’ Hoses hockey game returns to Jacksonville to help local charities

Jacksonville, FL. — Local heroes will battle it out for not only a Stanley Cup-style trophy, but bragging rights for the year.

Jacksonville’s annual Guns N’ Hoses charity hockey game is on for this year!

Mayor Lenny Curry announced Monday morning.

Captain Stephen Myers, who’s been with the Jacksonville Fire Rescue for 18 years, is one of the founders of the Guns N’ Hoses hockey game.

“The second year the Ice Men came to town and we were able to partner with them and then eventually get the game moved to the arena,” Capt. Myers said.

For the last 7 years, he’s never missed playing in a game.

Proceeds from the game help support local charities that benefit the fraternal order of police and JFRD.

Last year money went to the family of Brian McCluney.

Action News Jax first reported in 2019 when he and fellow firefighter Justin Walker disappeared after going fishing.

“Everything that we raised in the 50/50 drawing and some other money from a jersey auction went to Brian McCluney’s wife and kids.

The year before that we gave the same money to the Jack Adams’ family when his family was in that car accident,” he said.

Seating to this year’s hockey game will also be limited to about 4,000 tickets due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Normally it’s around 9,000 tickets sold on a Saturday.

The record between police and firefighters is currently 3 – 3, which means this game will be the ultimate series tiebreaker.

“It’s always very close. I’m pretty sure it’ll probably be between one or two goals each way,” Capt. Myers said.

Mayor Curry said it’s still unclear if there will be a guns and hoses boxing match this year.

Last April, the boxing match was cancelled due to covid-19.

The Guns N’ Hoses charity hockey game will be played at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday February 20th at 3:00 p.m.
