2 separate shootings happen less than 24 hours apart at Jacksonville park

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — James Weldon Johnson Park was the scene of two separate shootings in the span of less than 24 hours.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said an argument led to a shooting shortly after the clock struck midnight for the new year on Wednesday.

A minor ended up getting hit in the crossfire. Police said the child was uninvolved.

He is expected to survive with one gunshot to the leg.

This was Jacksonville’s first shooting of 2025.

Action News Jax Shanila Kabir talked with people in JWJ Park on Wednesday morning. They said this is a disappointing way to start 2025.

Jacksonville resident Shane Bodenhorn told Action News Jax he believes this season is a time for celebrating with your family, but it can also cause people to be irresponsible.

“While families are out having fun with their children, they need to remember lots of people are out on drugs and drinking,” said Bodenhorn.

JSO said there were two gunmen were involved in the shooting, and both got away.

Officers are speaking to two witnesses.

Bodenhorn said this is a shame because James Weldon Johnson Park has a family-oriented reputation, and it attracts families and tourists all year long.

“The live music that they play and the concerts that are hosted here are wonderful,” he said.

About eight hours before this shooting, another one took place on Tuesday afternoon.

JSO said two men got into an argument. One man pulled out a gun and started shooting.

A bullet shattered glass at City Hall.
