7-year-old girl who survives horrific car wreck will be celebrated at Wolfson Children’s Challenge

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — This Saturday, patients at Wolfson Children’s Hospital will be honored at their 14th annual Wolfson Children’s Challenge. This annual challenge is a charity event that celebrates patient’s lives.

The charity event is happening at 121 Financial Ballpark. It’s going to raise money for Wolfson Children’s Hospital patients going through serious illness and injuries. I got to speak with one of Wolfson’s former patients, a 7-year-old girl who almost died in a horrific car wreck last year.

“I had surgery, and it was a little bit scary,” Kilynn Overman-Miller said.

Last year in Kilynn was hospitalized for 21 days, 8 of which were spent in the ICU but still Kilynn smiled. Her grandmother Rayanne says she is a trooper.

“Her intestines were out laying on her legs, I mean that whole area was split open,” Rayanne said.

After being in a medically induced coma, paralyzed for 5 days, undergoing several surgeries for a cracked vertebrae, damaged muscles and intestines and 4 months of rehab, Kilynn is a happy and healthy second grader.

She credits the medical staff at Wolfson Children’s hospital for her recovery.

“Somebody to do art with me, the nurses kept checking on me and they sing songs with me,” Kilynn said.

In honor of Kilynn and over 4 dozen other current and former patients – Wolfson Children’s Hospital will celebrate this Saturday at 121 Financial Ballpark. It’s the hospital’s 14th annual Wolfson’s Children Challenge. An event featuring races and fundraiser opportunities that help fund lifesaving trauma equipment.
