Action News Jax Investigates: At least 7 crashes on dangerous bend in Murray Hill

A mailbox was thrown to the ground Monday night after neighbors say a car smashed into it on Post Street near Hamilton Street.

Within the hour, neighbors say another mailbox was hit, and an SUV smashed through a fence hitting a tree.

“It’s affecting everyone now and when the sun goes down, we're waiting for it to happen again,” neighbor Holly Franklin said.

Franklin said more than a handful of homes have been hit by a vehicle over the past few years.

“This entire city block, eight houses, there’s not a house in a span that hasn’t been affected by people speeding,” said Franklin.

A neighbor showed us pictures after a truck smashed into his home in December 2015.

We were also there three months ago after another truck smashed into a home two doors down.

And two weeks ago, there was more bad news.

“One ran into a new picket fence, plowed it down and the chain link behind it. The following car knocked down the wooden fence,” Franklin said.

Within days, Franklin said another car knocked down a school speed limit sign.

Franklin and her neighbors say the problem is speeders on a 20 mph curve.

We took our speed gun out and in a five-minute period caught five people going at least 10 mph over the speed limit.

Another was going 15 mph over the limit.

“Some neighbors have talked about potentially being enough room for a roundabout or speed bumps,” Franklin said.

Since Post Street is a state road, we reached out to the Florida Department of Transportation to see what can be done.

FDOT said they will check into it and bring it up during next week’s safety meeting.

This area is also a school zone and neighbors worry if something isn't done a child could also be hurt.

FDOT said that school zone at Post and Hamilton streets is set to be rebuilt and they’re not sure how that will affect traffic yet.
