Another crash at curve neighbors deemed dangerous, FDOT making safety changes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A dangerous curve in Murray Hill has the Florida Department of Transportation making safety changes.

Between five and nine crashes happen each year at the Post and Hamilton streets intersection, according to FDOT.

Crash statistics show at least 38 collisions have happened at the intersection between 2013 and 2019.

On Thursday night, a truck crashed at the curve and flipped upside down. It took out several street signs and snapped a pole.

In April, Action News Jax told you when a car went out of control and came within feet of one family's home.

At the time, Action News Jax took neighbors’ concerns to FDOT and was told a safety study was underway.

In June, Action News Jax obtained a copy of the finalized intersection safety review.

TRENDING:

FDOT said in April that it sent a request to the city of Jacksonville traffic engineering department to reprogram the traffic signal to “rest on RED” for all four approaches between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The study found 15 of the total number of reported crashes occurred between those hours.

The “rest on RED” traffic signal change means the traffic signal shows a RED light for all four approaches until a vehicle is detected at the signal. It aims to force drivers to slow down and stop at the intersection.

FDOT said it’s currently getting a cost estimate to develop construction plans for softening the curve by milling and resurfacing the intersection and replacing the pavement markings.

Once the estimate is received, the project will move to design and then construction.

The safety report also recommends the installation of 120 Internally Illuminated Raised Pavement Markers, improved striping of pavement markings and dynamic LED chevron signs through the curve of the intersection.
