Around Jax: Downtown bar will get major overhaul, plus proposal for mixed use market

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Knowing what’s going on or what’s going “up” around Jacksonville can be a full-time job. That’s why Action News Jax is launching our new segment focused on all things “what to do and where to go” in town.

Soon, you’ll have more options to grab a bite or a drink before a Jags game. Action News Jax has learned the established ‘That Bar’ next to to Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena is getting a major upgrade. The newly expanded and improved bar will have a rooftop patio.

An interesting note: The original structure was built in 1910. This project just got greenlighted by the Downtown Development Review Board at its Jan. 12 meeting. Action News Jax is working to find out when construction will start on the project.

Action News Jax also dug through more plans for Jacksonville, and found out there’s another proposal for a new bar just one neighborhood over. This one is planned in LaVilla. It would be on the corner of Broad and Forsyth streets.

The project was presented to the DDRB as a Daily’s Mixed Use property, described as a multi-story building with a neighborhood market, restaurant space and rooftop bar and restaurant.

DDRB did not vote on the approval of this project during its Jan. 12 meeting. Instead, they deferred the vote with the intention to schedule a future meeting.

Nearly a year after a fire shut its doors, Grumpy’s restaurant in Middleburg is back open.

The owner says the restaurant refreshed its interior and has a new staff ready to serve you you’re favorite breakfast and brunch staples.
