FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating how at least one person died in a multi-car crash in Clay County on U.S. 17 in Fleming Island at the intersection of Copper Stone Drive on Wednesday night.

First responders told Action News Jax they rushed three adults to the hospital, and another adult refused treatment.

"I'm amazed it hasn't happened more often than not out here. It's really dangerous because it's just so difficult to judge traffic, especially coming north on 17," said Garry McGrath while surveying the crash scene in front of his neighborhood.

The deadly collision involved four vehicles and closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 17 for hours.

Neighbors call the intersection dangerous.

"When I heard about it, I came out to see if any of my neighbors was involved. It's difficult to recognize any of the cars, I'm praying its not one of my neighbors. It's awful, terrible, beyond tragic," McGrath said.

FHP said the driver of a Honda Versa, Oscar Daniels-Bobua, 60, veered across U.S. 17, over the concrete median and hit a Mercedes-head on. The Versa then overturned, hit a Honda Civic SI and the debris struck another Civic.

Daniels-Bobua died at Orange Park Medical Center.

The driver and passenger in the Mercedes were taken to Orange Park Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

The two other drivers were not hurt.
