ORIGINAL - Florida Highway Patrol investigators tell Action News Jax a baby girl is in critical condition after suffering life-threatening injuries in a five-vehicle crash in Clay County Sunday night.

Investigators say the baby, and the baby’s mother, Abigail Eberwein, 19, and her grandmother, Nannette Jeanne Green, 49, were in a Kia Soul at a stoplight at the intersection of Blanding Boulevard and College Drive when an SUV crashed into them from the rear.

Six people, including the infant, were transported to area hospitals for treatment, according to troopers. Investigators say the other five, were treated for minor to moderate injuries. According to the FHP report, a Jeep Limited driven by Randy Teal, 30, was traveling southbound on Blanding Boulevard in the center lane, while the Kia Soul, and a Toyota Camry, were both stopped in the center lane of Blanding Boulevard.

The report goes on to outline what occurred according to their investigation and witness statements, reading the Jeep driven by Teal “… struck the rear of …” the Kia Soul. Here’s what the report states unfolded after the impact:

“…[The Kia Soul] rotated and its front struck the rear of [a Toyota Camry driven by Amy Shipley, 48] and sideswiped [a Toyota Camry driven by McKenna Baker, 20]. The left rear of [the Toyota Camry driven by McKenna Baker, 20] struck the front right of [a Chevy Sonic, driven by Kristen Hinson, 20],” the report states.

According to the report, the involved vehicles came to rest blocking the southbound lanes of Blanding.

FHP Master Sgt. Dylan Bryan tells Action News Jax Ryan Nelson they’re investigating whether drugs, alcohol or distracted driving were factors in the incident.
