Two southbound lanes reopen on Buckman Bridge

If you take the Buckman Bridge over the St. Johns River be aware of an anticipated closure this afternoon. Florida Highway Patrol says it will close all southbound lanes of I-295 at 1 p.m. for investigative purposes. The full detour is expected to take about an hour.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators will be collecting evidence following a fatal crash that happened just before 2:00 am Sunday. The driver of a motorized scooter was rear-ended by an SUV in the southbound lanes of the Buckman Bridge and was thrown from the scooter.

The 41-year-old man from Orange Park died on scene. He was not publicly identified by law enforcement under Marsy’s Law. The driver who rear-ended him was from out of state and, so far, no charges have been filed by FHP.

Southbound traffic will be detoured to Roosevelt Blvd. Following the initial investigation activities, law enforcement personnel is expected to reopen the two inside lanes of the Buckman Bridge and keep the outside lanes closed for an additional period.

The additional lane closures are expected to be in place for an additional two hours.

Officials expect the closures to be lifted by 4 p.m., investigation and unforeseen circumstances permitting. Inquiries regarding the investigation will be sent to the Florida Highway Patrol.
