CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — UPDATE 11:44 p.m.: The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has announced that the hostage situation at a gas station in Green Cove Springs has ended around 11 p.m. after the SWAT team operator shot the man and the hostage was rescued.
The hostage is speaking with detectives while the man who was shot was taken to the hospital. Police do not know what led to the situation but the hostage and the suspect do know each other.
Police expect the roads to be reopened soon.
Details are limited at this time. Check back for updates.
UPDATE 10:50 p.m.: Police have made contact with the man inside the gas station. It is unclear what the woman’s condition is and if anyone is armed.
UPDATE 8:57 p.m.: The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Green Cove Springs Police Department has confirmed there is a hostage situation between a man and a woman inside of the Speedway gas station on US-17 and SR-16.
The incident started around 7:04 p.m. In response, SWAT units were deployed in the area. Traffic has since been redirected to north of US-17.
Police believe this is a domestic dispute. It has no relation to the parade happening nearby, police confirmed.
UPDATE 8:15 p.m.: According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the incident does not appear to be related to the parade in the area.
To get to St. Johns County, travelers should go north of US-17. Police say to also avoid Shands Bridge along with US-17 at SR-16.
