Coast Guard, police search for person in St. Johns River in downtown Jacksonville

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office searched the St. Johns River Friday night for a person in the water in downtown Jacksonville.

Initial reports to the Coast Guard indicated that a person had fallen into the water from the Riverwalk near the Acosta Bridge.

A witness tells Action News Jax a man went into the water around 5:30 p.m. trying to reach for a balloon or something like it. That witness said the man climbed over the railing trying to reach for the object and he either jumped or fell in.

A crew aboard a 29-foot Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Mayport was diverted at 6:03 p.m. and arrived on scene at 6:23 p.m. to search. Authorities are searching an area between the Main Street Bridge and the Fuller Warren Bridge.

Crews are waiting on the tides to improve so they are able to do more in their search efforts.
