cold case spotlight

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla — On a cold December evening two men drove down a shortcut road to visit their friends living off of Goldwater Avenue in San Mateo. When the couple did not answer the door, one of the men looked through a front window to discover Steven Stroud, 24, lying on the ground surrounded by blood.

Through a bedroom window, they could see Donna Hunter, 19, bleeding and barely alive. One of the men rushed to a nearby convenience store to call 911.

Donna was rushed to a hospital, but died from multiple gunshot wounds before they could arrive. Steven was declared dead at the scene.

Investigators noted that there was no forced entry and the killers were likely acquainted with the victims. They also noted blood patterns on the floor from the living room to the bedroom indicating Donna was running away from the shooter.

Both Donna and Steven grew up in South Putnam. Donna graduated from Crescent City Junior Senior High School and Steven worked for his father in Welaka.
