Man trying to steer disabled truck killed in crash at I-295 and Commonwealth Avenue

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was killed in a fatal crash that closed all southbound lanes of Interstate 295 near Commonwealth Avenue on the Westside Friday night.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash at 7:15 p.m. and later said that a pedestrian was hit and killed at the scene of the crash.

All southbound lanes of I-295 were closed to traffic while FHP investigated the accident. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said all traffic is being diverted onto Pritchard Road.

The crash involved two vehicles, one was a disabled pickup truck with two people inside, according to FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan.

They pulled over to the side of the road and tried to push the truck from behind.

Bryan said a second truck driving hit the man trying to steer the disabled truck and that person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim's name has not yet been released, but Bryan said the man was in his mid 50s.

The investigation is continuing and no charges are being filed at this time pending test results.
