Creekside High student accused of having gun in SUV on campus parking lot

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — A local high school student faces charges after being accused of bringing a gun on campus.

A Deputy K-9 sniffed out the gun in the teen's SUV in the parking lot of Creekside High School in St. Johns County.

Deputies found a .38-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver near the wheel-well area of a student's Ford Explorer.

Police say the Explorer was driven by 18-year-old Griffin Hudgins, a senior at the high school.

A K-9 unit was actually at the school for a different reason when it sniffed out the gun. Once police found the gun, Hudgins allegedly told a school worker that he knew the gun was there.

Police say the gun was loaded and next to it was a box of .38-caliber rounds.

Hudgins was arrested for possession of a firearm on school property and was suspended for 10 days and could face more punishment.

"All of our level four infractions are referred to our district discipline committee for reviewable possible administration placement in our alternative school or possible expulsion based on the nature of the incident," said Paul Abbatinozzi, director for school services.

That review will likely happen next week. School officials also said that in talking with police, they believe that at no time was there a threat to any other students or faculty at the school.
