DCPS rolls out new teacher internship program

Duval County Schools is rolling out a new internship program to help deal with the national teacher shortage.

DCPS said Jumpstart 2.0 is a 6-week paid teacher internship program. People who want to teach and have a statement of eligibility from the Florida Department of Education can apply for 40 openings.

Interns will train for four weeks with district teacher development specialists, followed by two weeks of shadowing a master teacher.

Candidates have until Nov. 1 to apply to be a part of the first cohort, which will run from Nov. 4 to Dec. 20.

Interns will be paid a part-time teacher rate of $26 an hour for 25 hours a week. Participants will be assigned to a full-time teaching position in January if they complete the program.

In another effort to combat the nationwide teacher shortage, Gov. DeSantis has proposed raising teacher starting salaries to $47,500.

Action News Jax found out the starting salary in Clay and St. Johns County right now is $38,000. In Duval, it's $39,500.
