Dozens of firefighters put out fire at glass-making plant on Westside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Dozens of firefighters put out at a fire at Anchor Glass Container Corporation on Huron Street in the Woodstock area on Tuesday.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department told Action News Jax the fire started after equipment from a furnace malfunctioned.

At one point there were at least 60 crew members on scene.

Our Action News Jax Sky Vision Drone flew over Anchor Glass to give you an aerial view of the glass-making plant.

We saw some smoke coming from the top of the building and multiple crews on scene.

At one point JFRD had crews on the roof monitoring the building to make sure everything was out. They even removed a couple of metal panels to look for any hidden fires.

JFRD told Action News Jax the call came in at 9 a.m. When crews got on scene, they found lots of smoke coming from the plant.

That’s when they went around the backside of the building and went in to put out the fire.

Inside the building, we’re told they have big heavy duty high-temperature furnaces that help melt the glass.

One of the furnaces caught fire after its equipment malfunctioned.

“Crews worked hard to extinguish it. There was kind of a chimney effect with it as it rose, but the good thing is we had no injuries,” Capt. Eric Prosswimmer with JFRD said.

Prosswimmer said there’s no need for an investigator to be called out.

The fire was taken care of in about 45 minutes and the glass-making plant was not forced to shut down.
