JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The box-office hit “Straight Outta Compton” dominated the box office; it’s the story behind the hip-hop group NWA. The movie inspired a slogan craze and it has found its way to Kernan Middle School.
The school is selling “Straight Outta Kernan” T-shirts.
After a concerned parent called Action News Jax about the T-shirts, we asked school officials why it’s selling the shirts and where the money is going.
The district’s spokesman, Mark Sherwood, sent a statement that reads in part:
“The shirt sale at Kernan Middle School is intended to increase school spirit and pride, and support its positive behavior intervention program. The slogan was chosen in regards to recent popular culture, and has been used by many custom T-shirt manufacturers of recent.”
"I would much rather give $20 as a donation to the school and get nothing in return,” said Christina Patterson.
Several parents told Action News Jax the T-shirts promote a negative message. Others say it's about the intention behind the shirt.
"If it had nothing to do with the violence part of it, then I'd be OK with it," said Kelly Castelo.
The school is standing by the shirts — and insists it's all about school pride.
