JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A driver was caught on camera passing a stopped school bus. Action News Jax first told you about the incident from Ponte Vedra Beach last week.

Duval County Buses will carry more than 50,000 kids from all over Duval County on the first day of school. Drivers tell Action News Jax that they not only have to pay attention to what’s on the bus, but what’s around them.

Birnie School Bus Company is going over their bus routes, making sure drivers are ready for the first day of school in Duval County: “The very first day of school Aug. 24, you got just under a thousand school buses on the road,” said Paul Soares, with Duval County Schools.

Soares said more than 50,000 students will ride the buses on the first day of School.

Bus drivers Latrell Rouse and Iris Figurera said more and more people are driving by even though the stop sign is out.

Action News Jax photographer Mark Dougherty and reporter Larry Spruill rode on one of their buses to see first hand.

Within five minutes of the bus ride, they saw cars driving by even though the stop sign was out and someone was crossing the road.

The news crew tried again two minutes later and this time a white truck drove by. It wasn’t until our third attempt where everyone on the road actually stopped,

“We certainly need people to do their best to be as safe as they can be, there's no real forgiveness if a person gets hurts,” said Soares.

According to state law, cars have to stop in both directions on a two lane highway or multi lanes with no barrier in the middle. You don’t have to stop on the opposite side, if a barrier is in the middle of the road. You can get a traffic ticket if you don’t follow these rules.
