Duval County elections supervisor: Early voting numbers 'never before seen' for midterms

All eyes will be on Florida Tuesday as voters will decide two major elections.

Floridians will elect a new governor and vote for one of the state’s seats in the U.S. Senate.

According to brand-new polls, Democrats have a slight edge in both races.

In Duval County, Supervisor of Elections Mike Hogan said the number of early votes over the weekend has never before been seen for a midterm election.

Hogan said it has the feeling of a presidential election — predicting total turnout possibly in the 60% range.  He said 37% of those registered already voted early or absentee.

For some context, 52 percent was the county’s total turnout in the 2014 midterms.

Republican Gov. Rick Scott and Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson have been holding rallies, sparring over key issues, like the environment.

“I have tried to protect the environment, my opponent has savaged the environment, and you see the results of the green algae and the red tide,” Nelson said.

“I asked Barack Obama and Bill Nelson to fund the dike Lake Okeechobee,” Scott said. “It’s their project. You know how much money I got? Nothing.”
