Duval County Health Department confirms two cases of Monkeypox in Jacksonville

Duval County is reporting its first cases of monkeypox.

According to the Florida Department of Health’s Reportable Diseases Frequency Report, there are two cases in Jacksonville right now.

Cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in at least 43 states, including Florida.

And while the Centers for Disease Control have issued a health advisory regarding recent cases in the U.S., local health departments say the chance of contracting monkeypox remains low.

Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms but milder, the CDC says.

They include fever, headache, muscle aches, and a rash that can look like pimples or blisters.

While the vast majority of reported infections have happened in men who have sex with men, health officials have stressed that anyone can catch the virus. It is not an STI or STD.
