JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Update 8/28/2020: JSO has made an arrest in the investigation. Purkanah Mayo has been charged with second-degree murder.

Update 8/26/2020: The Florida Department of Children and Families reports that the mother stabbed her 6-year-old daughter. According to DCF, the mother did not have parental rights of the child. At the time of the stabbing, the mother was visiting the child’s home.
Original Story 8/19/2020: The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a child under 8 is dead after a stabbing on New Haven Road, Wednesday afternoon.
According to JSO, they responded to the 1800 block of New Haven Road where they found a woman and child suffering from stab wounds.

They were both transported to the hospital. The child died and the woman is in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.
JSO believes that the woman stabbed the child and then stabbed herself.
The sheriff’s office did not say the relationship between the woman and the child.
