JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Frustration has been building for weeks from people across our area over missed yard waste and trash pickup.

On Monday, the city of Jacksonville leaders announced it was suspending recycling services as a temporary solution to address the problem.

Next week on October 4, 2021, it will open 14 temporary recycling locations to drop off your items that need to be recycled.

Rudy Durden has lived on Sharonhill Drive in Arlington for 52 years and he’s frustrated.

His yard waste hasn’t been picked up for weeks.

“They missed days, they come late, sometimes they don’t come. in the case of yard trash, they haven’t been here 5 weeks. Tomorrow makes 6 if they don’t come then,” Durden said.

Mayor Lenny Curry said the city has received hundreds of calls and e-mails in the past few months from people across our area upset about missed or delayed waste collection and their taxpayer dollars that are being spent.

Curry said the waste that hasn’t been picked up has been caused by labor shortages across the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said waste haulers can’t keep up with the demand and that’s causing the backlog in waste collection.

“This was a difficult decision. I know this is not a perfect solution and that many people in our community are passionate about recycling. This is why we’re standing up 14 recycling sites throughout the city where residents can bring their item for collection,” Curry said.

But Durden said he likely won’t be using them.

“No, I don’t think so that’s a little bit more than this body’s good for. It’s kind of hard to carry a 50 gallon can around in your car. I don’t think you can do that very easily,” Durden said.

The recycling sites will be open Monday through Saturday from sunrise to sunset.
