Duval County students run into problems with online login during storm

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

School is in session Thursday morning for Duval County Schools, but instead of learning in the classroom kids are learning online.

Clay, Bradford, Columbia and Union County students have the day off because of Tropical Storm Eta.

Action News Jax Alicia Tarancon found out that some of these children haven’t been able to do any of their school work this morning.

Tonya Delgado is a Duval county parent who lives on the west side.

She told me she’s frustrated.

She and her son woke at around 7:00 a.m. to try and log-in to Duval HomeRoom and Teams, but after trying to log in for an hour Delgado said they just gave up.

“It reroutes him through Teams and tells him he doesn’t have an account and when he tries to set up an account then it reroutes him again just to the original startup screen,” Delgado said.

Delgado told me her 12-year-old son attends Baldwin Middle – High School.

Just after 5pm on Wednesday the Duval County School District announced that students would still have school on Thursday but it was going to be online.

Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of the students, but parents like Delgado told me they didn’t have a lot of time to prepare.

“I got two e-mails and probably three different phone calls to let me know that they’re going to be online but no links or anything were provided,” she said.

And she’s not alone. When we checked DCPS’s Facebook page Thursday morning dozens of parents said they were also having issues logging on.

Delgado says next time kids are told to work from home she wants DCPS to make sure all the students are able to log in.

“As of right now it’s going to be an unexcused absence due to a weather day on my child’s part because he couldn’t get into a system that the school is telling him he has to use,” she said.

I’ve reached out to DCPS to see what they are doing to help the students who are still having issues accessing Duval HomeRoom or Teams for their assignments and if the district plans to make any changes when it comes to learning online during severe weather.

Action News Jax will have that answer for you ahead at 5 p.m.
