Family searching for answers after son shot and killed in Jacksonville officer involved shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The family of a man killed by a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office police officer says they want to see body camera video that captured their son’s final moments.

Jamee Johnson, 22, was shot and killed Saturday after JSO says he dragged an officer with his car.

“He was college educated. He wasn’t a thug,” Harvey Johnson said.

He was a senior at Florida A. & M. University in Tallahassee, Florida.

Harvey says his son had a bright future studying business before he was shot and killed by police.

“He’s never been in any type of trouble with the law,” Harvey said.

JSO says when Officers Graham and Garriga pulled Jamee over for a traffic stop on Jacksonville’s east side, they saw a gun in the car and asked him to step out.

Johnson’s father says he had a license for that gun.

“He got it at the beginning of this year,” Johnson added.

JSO says when Garriga tried to arrest Jamee, he pushed the officer, jumped back into the car and hit the gas.

That’s when Garriga reached into the car, trying to get control of it, and was left partially hanging out as the car was moving.

When the car stopped, Garriga shot Jamee four times.

Action News Jax investigates has learned Garriga served as a K-9 deputy with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Records show Garriga was involved in a deadly shooting in 2015 during an undercover drug operation.

Garriga fired his weapon 13 times.

Crime and safety expert Dale Carson says only body camera footage worn by the officers will determine what really happened in this case.

“The question is, what did the individual do? Did he reach for the gun?’ Carson said.

FDLE cleared Garriga from the shooting in 2015.

He resigned from Putnam County Sheriff’s Office last year to work for JSO.
